The old Mounds Theater on St. Paul's East Side could get new life in an
agreement between its owner, George Hardenbergh, center, and Raeann Ruth
and her Portage for Youth group. Hardenbergh will give the 78-year
old building to the group for use as a commmunity center and place for
the perfoming arts -- if enough money can be raised for the theater's renovation.
The Mounds Theater is an important fixture in the neighborhood, says Norm
Tubbesing, right, who grew up three blocks from the 700-seat theater and
managed it for 10 years. He was its owner and operator from 1960
to 1964, when it closed. It later was sold to Hardenbergh. Ruth,
showing her drawing of the theater, went on her first date there at age
16.
